Verse of the Day – July 4, 2026
Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, without it no one will see the Lord. — Hebrews 12:14
What’s Happening Here
Hebrews 12 is a chapter about discipline, endurance, and running the race with perseverance. Right after the famous “cloud of witnesses” and the call to lay aside every weight and sin, we get this practical command. It’s not a gentle suggestion – it’s presented as essential to finishing the race and seeing God.
The Word
“Pursue” is dioko. – an active, energetic verb often used for chasing, hunting, or pressing hard after something. It’s the same word Paul uses when he says he presses on toward the goal. Peace (eirene) here means more than the absence of conflict; it’s wholeness, harmony, the kind of relational health that reflects God’s own character. Holiness (hagiosmos) means set apart, consecrated – distinct from the ways of the world.
The warning is stark: without holiness, no one will see the Lord. This isn’t about earning salvation but about the transformed life that makes fellowship with a holy God possible.
The World Then
The original audience was Jewish believers facing pressure to abandon their faith and return to the safety of old religious systems. In that tense environment, pursuing peace with everyone (including those who opposed them) while refusing to compromise holiness was incredibly difficult. The author reminds them that the goal isn’t just survival. It’s seeing the Lord Himself.
An Echo in History
Corrie ten Boom again comes to mind, as she so often does in our Verse & Vision posts. After surviving Ravensbrück, she met a former guard who had been cruel to her sister. In that moment she chose to extend forgiveness (pursuing peace) while remaining utterly set apart in her devotion to Christ. The act of shaking his hand was one of the most powerful pictures of holiness and peace working together in her life.
The Living Edge
In our polarized, easily offended age, pursuing peace with everyone feels almost impossible. Yet the call remains: chase harmony without sacrificing holiness. That might mean hard conversations done with gentleness, boundaries kept with grace, or refusing to let bitterness take root even when we’ve been wronged. The promise is beautiful: those who live this way get to see the Lord more clearly, both now and one day face to face.
