Root Work: The Deliverance Sessions
Session One – Foundations: Why This Work Is Necessary and Why You Must Not Walk It Alone
The church has largely forgotten how to deal with the roots and has instead become skilled at managing fruit.
In most modern churches today, you will find anxiety groups, boundaries workshops, and Christian counseling referrals. You will hear sermons that name trauma and then move quickly to “God is with you.”
All of that can be useful. None of it is the same as identifying the open door, naming the strong man that entered through it, renouncing the agreements that keep him there, and allowing the Holy Spirit to fill the cleaned-out space.
This series exists because surface Christianity is leaving people in chains while telling them they are free.
What the Modern Church Thinks It Knows (and Does Not)
Much of contemporary Christianity, especially in New Thought-influenced, progressive, or heavily therapeutic streams, has made several quiet but devastating exchanges:
Demons have been reduced to metaphors for “negative energy,” “inner critics,” or “systemic trauma.” Deliverance has been replaced by “inner child work,” “reparenting,” or endless processing. Authority in Christ has been soft-pedaled into self-empowerment language. The reality of legal access given to the enemy through trauma, sin, occult involvement, or unrepented bitterness has been dismissed as medieval.
Scripture does not support any of this.
Paul writes with absolute clarity:
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. — Ephesians 6:12
This is not poetic language for psychological struggle. It is a description of actual conflict in the unseen realm that affects the seen. When the church pretends otherwise, it leaves people fighting with the wrong weapons.
Jesus Himself treated demons as real, personal, and subject to His authority. He did not send the Gerasene man to therapy first (Mark 5). He did not tell the boy’s father that the seizures were only neurological (Mark 9). He addressed the spirit, and the spirit left. Then He taught His disciples to do the same.
The early church continued this. The modern church, in many places, has quietly stopped.
New Thought Christianity (and its soft cousins in progressive and some charismatic circles) compounds the error by teaching that mind, vibration, or “Christ consciousness” is the primary agent of change. That is not the gospel.
The gospel is that Jesus disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame by triumphing over them at the cross (Colossians 2:15). Freedom is not achieved by better thinking. It is received by repentance, renunciation, and the filling of the Holy Spirit after the legal ground has been removed.
The Strong Man Principle
Jesus said:
Or how can someone enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. — Matthew 12:29
There is almost always a primary spirit (the strong man) that opens the door and then invites others. Abandonment is a frequent strong man. So is fear. So is pride. So is the spirit that entered through sexual violation or sexual promiscuity, or through a parent’s rejection.
Once that primary spirit has legal ground, secondary spirits of entitlement, rage, addiction, self-hatred, or performance readily follow. They do not arrive at random. They attach themselves to the specific lies the strong man has already planted and then reinforce those lies until the person begins to experience the bondage as personality, identity, or simply “the way I am.” What started as one open door becomes a reinforced stronghold that feels permanent.
Matthew 12:43-45 warns what happens when a spirit is driven out but the house is left empty: it returns with seven more wicked than itself. This is why “casting out” without thorough root work and without the person being filled and discipled often fails or makes things worse.
A Necessary Warning
This is not beginner material.
If you are new to the faith, still unstable in identity, prone to spiritual sensationalism, or currently in deep crisis without covering, do not attempt this work alone.
Spiritual warfare is real. Immature or isolated attempts can open more doors, produce confusion, or leave a person more oppressed than before. You need a mature, theologically grounded, Spirit-filled believer who knows both the Word and the ways of the Spirit. You need someone who will not traffic in theatrics, formulas, or New Age mixtures, and who will walk with you in ongoing discipleship after the session.
I say this as someone who has seen both genuine freedom and genuine damage. This work is too serious for curiosity or emotional high.
What This Series Will Do
Root Work: The Deliverance Sessions will move slowly and thoroughly.
We will examine specific strong men and the clusters they typically bring.
We will look at the common open doors (trauma, generational patterns where biblically warranted, occult involvement, unforgiveness, sexual sin, idolatry of self or others).
We will walk through the biblical process of identification, repentance, renunciation, and receiving the Holy Spirit’s filling.
We will stay tethered to Scripture in context, not proof-texts or experiential excess.
We will distinguish true spirituality from aesthetic spirituality, performance spirituality, and therapeutic spirituality that never actually confronts the enemy.
Every post will be heavy with the Word. Not as decoration, but as the actual authority and map.
The Invitation and the Guardrail
Jesus said the truth will set you free (John 8:32). He also said that if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John 8:36). That freedom is available. It is not automatic. It requires cooperation with the Spirit in the places we have given ground.
If you are ready to go after roots rather than manage fruit, stay with this series.
If you know you are not yet mature enough to walk this without covering, find that covering first. Do not rush.
James 4:7 remains the simple, powerful order:
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Submission first. Then resistance. In that order. We begin the actual work in the next session.
A Submission Prayer
Father,
I submit myself to You.
I renounce every agreement I have made with fear, pride, self-protection, or the enemy’s lies.
I ask You to search me, reveal any open doors, and give me the wisdom and covering I need before I go further.
Fill every place that has been empty or occupied.
I choose Your lordship over my own understanding.
In the name of Jesus.
Amen.
Closing Thoughts
This is only the beginning of the work. Roots take time to expose and longer to remove. Stay patient, stay submitted, and stay under covering.
Freedom is not a moment; it is a sustained yielding to the One who already triumphed.
