Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. — Isaiah 40:31
What’s Happening Here
Isaiah 40 opens a major section of comfort for a people worn down by exile and long waiting. God has just declared that He tends His flock like a shepherd and that His understanding is beyond measure. The Word
The word often translated “hope” or “wait” carries the sense of expectant, active trust. It is not passive resignation. “Renew” means to exchange or replace. The tired strength is traded for new strength. The images progress from soaring like eagles, to running without weariness, to walking without fainting. Even the ordinary, steady steps of daily life are sustained by this renewed strength.
The World Then
The original audience had lived through national collapse, displacement, and the slow ache of wondering whether God still saw them. Many felt their strength had simply run out. Isaiah’s words met them in that depletion with a clear alternative: strength does not finally come from within or from circumstances. It comes from hoping in the Lord.
An Echo in History
This verse has carried countless believers through seasons of exhaustion. Missionaries, caregivers, the chronically ill, and those walking long roads of unanswered prayer have returned to it again and again. The promise is not that weariness never comes, but that those who keep placing their hope in the Lord find strength renewed for the next step, the next mile, the next season.
