God is love. — 1 John 4:16

John is writing to a community facing confusion about true faith, love, and the nature of God. In this section he presses the connection between knowing God and living in love. The simple statement “God is love” is not a soft sentiment. It is a foundational claim about who God is in His very being.
The Word
The Greek word for love here is agape, the self-giving, willful love that seeks the good of the other. John does not say God has love or that God is loving as one quality among many. He says God is love. Love is not merely something God does. It is essential to who He is. To know God is to encounter this love, and to live in this love is evidence that we remain in Him.
The World Then
The early church was navigating false teachings that often separated spiritual knowledge from practical love. Some claimed special insight while showing little care for others. John confronts that disconnect. If God Himself is love, then any claim to know Him must be tested by whether love is present in the life of the believer.

When we feel uncertain of His heart toward us, we can return here. When we struggle to love others, we remember that we are called to reflect the very nature of the One who first loved us. To abide in God is to abide in love.
