Verse of the Day – August 9, 2026

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. — Proverbs 11:25

What’s Happening Here

Proverbs often pairs actions with their natural outcomes. In this short saying, generosity and the act of refreshing others are linked to personal flourishing and renewal. The verse presents a simple pattern: those who give and restore others find themselves receiving in return.

The Word

The word for “generous” carries the sense of a person who is open-handed and kind. “Prosper” here is not limited to material wealth. It includes a broader sense of flourishing and well-being. “Refreshes” evokes the image of giving water to the thirsty or bringing relief to the weary. The promise is reciprocal: the one who brings refreshment to others will also be refreshed.

The World Then

In the ancient world, survival often depended on mutual support within the community. Generosity was not merely a private virtue. It was a practical necessity and a mark of wisdom. Proverbs presents this as a reliable pattern of life under God’s design: those who pour out for others are not left empty.

An Echo in History

This principle has been lived out across the centuries. Many who have quietly refreshed others through hospitality, encouragement, or practical help have later testified to unexpected provision and renewal in their own lives. The pattern holds not as a rigid formula but as a consistent fruit of living with open hands.

The Living Edge

It is easy to focus on our own need for refreshment and to hold back until we feel full. This verse turns that instinct around. Refreshing others becomes the path to our own renewal. Generosity is not primarily about having extra to spare. It is about a posture of openness that trusts God to supply both the giving and the receiving. When we choose to refresh others, we step into a way of life that God Himself sustains.

A Closing Thought

A generous person will prosper. Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
