Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. — Galatians 6:2
What’s Happening Here
Paul has been teaching the Galatians what life in the Spirit looks like. After warning against pride and comparison, he turns to the practical shape of love. When someone is weighed down, the community does not look away. They take up the load together. That shared carrying, he says, fulfills the law of Christ.
The Word
“Burdens” are the heavy things a person cannot easily manage alone: failure, grief, temptation, need. “Carry” means to take up and bear with, not to inspect from a distance. “The law of Christ” is the law of love, the command Jesus gave to love one another as He has loved us. Fulfilling it is not first a matter of rules kept in private. It is love made visible in the weight we help one another hold.
The World Then
The Galatian churches were tempted to measure spirituality by performance and status. Some were being restored after falling. Others were watching. Paul refuses a community where the strong stand apart from the struggling. In Christ, burden-bearing is not optional kindness. It is the family pattern.
An Echo in History
This verse has formed the best instincts of the church: meals carried to the grieving, sins confessed and not abandoned, practical help given without lecture. It has also exposed the worst: communities that talk about love while leaving people to collapse under what they cannot carry alone.
The Living Edge
We often admire self-sufficiency and hesitate to either ask for help or offer it. This verse cuts through both. Some loads are meant to be shared. Fulfilling the law of Christ looks like showing up under someone else’s weight, and like letting trusted people show up under ours. Love is not only what we feel. It is what we are willing to help carry.
