His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. — Lamentations 3:22-23
What’s Happening Here
Lamentations is a book of grief written in the aftermath of Jerusalem’s fall. The poet has been honest about devastation, judgment, and sorrow. Then, in the middle of that lament, he turns. The reason hope is not extinguished is this: the Lord’s compassions do not fail. They are new every morning. His faithfulness is great.
The Word
“Compassions” (or mercies) speaks of tender, steadfast mercy. “Never fail” means they are not used up and do not run out. “New every morning” is the language of fresh supply, not leftover kindness from yesterday. “Great is your faithfulness” is a confession of character. God remains true even when the city has fallen and the night has been long.
The World Then
The people had lost temple, land, and the structures that once felt permanent. Morning after disaster can feel empty. This verse does not deny the ruins. It names what still arrives with the dawn: mercy that has not been exhausted by the day before.
An Echo in History
These lines have become one of the church’s great confessions. They have been sung, prayed, and held onto by people who could not yet see restoration but could still believe mercy would meet them again. The hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” draws directly from this place. Grief and trust have shared this text for centuries.
The Living Edge
Some mornings arrive heavy. This verse does not ask us to pretend otherwise. It tells us what is also true: God’s compassion has not failed overnight. It is new again. We do not have to live on yesterday’s sense of His kindness. Faithfulness is not a memory. It is the character that meets us at the start of the day.
