What’s Happening Here
Moses is preparing Israel to enter the land. He has reminded them that the Lord chose them not because they were large or impressive, but because He loved them and kept the oath He swore to their fathers. Now he names the character of that God: He is faithful. He keeps His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
The Word
“Faithful God” is a statement about reliability. What He promises, He sustains. “Covenant of love” translates the rich idea of hesed joined to covenant commitment: loyal, enduring love. “To a thousand generations” stretches the promise far beyond one lifetime. The recipients are described clearly: those who love Him and keep His commandments. Love and obedience are not separated here. They belong together.
