Humanly speaking it is impossible, but with God everything is possible. — Matthew 19:26
What’s Happening Here
Jesus has just had a conversation with the rich young ruler, who walked away sad because he could not let go of his wealth. The disciples are stunned. If someone who appears so outwardly righteous and blessed cannot enter the kingdom, then who can? Jesus looks at them and speaks this verse. It is both a sobering acknowledgment of human impossibility and a soaring declaration of divine possibility.
The Word
The phrase “humanly speaking it is impossible” uses the Greek word adunatos, meaning powerless or incapable. It is a strong word that closes every door of human effort. Then comes the sharp contrast with “but with God.” The word “everything” (panta) is all-inclusive. There is no exception, no situation too far gone, no heart too hard, and no circumstance too tangled for God. The verse holds tension and hope in perfect balance.
The World Then
In first-century Jewish culture, wealth was often seen as a sign of God’s favor. The disciples’ shock makes sense in that context. If a rich man who kept the commandments could not be saved, then the situation truly seemed hopeless. Jesus flips their expectations. Salvation and transformation have never depended on human ability or merit. They have always depended on God.
An Echo in History
This verse has encouraged countless believers facing impossible situations. One beautiful example is the story of Gladys Aylward, a small English parlor maid with little education and no formal backing. Humanly speaking, her call to take the gospel to China seemed impossible. Yet God opened doors, protected her through war and danger, and used her to rescue hundreds of children. What was impossible with man became possible with God.
The Living Edge
We all face things that feel humanly impossible: broken relationships, health struggles, financial pressures, hardened hearts in those we love, or dreams that seem to have died. This verse does not deny the difficulty. It simply lifts our eyes higher. When we reach the end of our own strength, we are standing at the threshold where God’s power begins to move. The invitation is to release our grip on self-reliance and trust the One for whom nothing is impossible.

Humanly speaking, so much feels impossible.
But with God, everything is possible.
