I heard something recently stopped me in my tracks. In mere seconds, it laid bare the layered reality most of us sense but rarely name out loud.
A poor man works non-stop. A rich man lives off that labor. A soldier protects them both. The taxpayer pays for all three. The banker robs all four. The lawyer argues for all five. The doctor bills all six. The criminal scares all seven. And the politician? He lives like a king off all eight.
That very short story hits like a gut punch because it is not conspiracy. It is basic pattern recognition, yet so few recognize the pattern. Let’s talk about it for what it actually is. We have been sold the myth of a fair and balanced society where everyone has a noble role. Yet we are constantly gaslit, shamed, or told how ungrateful and selfish we are for simply calling it out.
If you pull back the curtain, though, you can’t help but see the extraction machine running exactly as designed. Mankind built the pyramid with our labor, our taxes, and our compliance. And now the majority of us are buried under it; not as royalty, but as the slaves who constructed our own prison.
The Poor Man Works Non-Stop
He gets up before the sun, clocks in, and pours everything into the labor that keeps the whole thing running. He works long, full days, and sometimes he works multiple jobs. He gets little rest and is imprisoned in a constant grind. This isn’t laziness or lack of ambition we’re talking about; it’s the foundation everything else in our 3D reality is built on.
Scripture is full of warnings about systems that crush the worker while others grow fat on their toil. James 5:4 is one of many stark examples:
Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.
A Rich Man Lives Off That Labor
Not every person with resources is evil, but the structure allows a few to extract value from the many without the same sweat equity. This layer often convinces itself it “deserves” it through innovation or risk, while the system quietly tilts the board. Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) reminds us that the pursuit of wealth under the sun is chasing after wind. It slips through your fingers, and you can’t take it with you.
Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. (Ecclesiastes 5:10)
A Soldier Protects Them Both
Building on the foundation of the poor man’s labor and the rich man’s extraction, the soldier is called to stand in the gap. Often drawn from the same poor and working classes, they carry the weight of protection for everyone above them. Yet they frequently return to inadequate care and forgotten promises. True honor belongs to them, but the system has a long habit of using their courage for purposes that serve the higher layers more than the people they swore to defend.
Scripture acknowledges the heavy cost of such service and the importance of remembering those who bear it:
No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13)
The Taxpayer Pays for All Three
This is most of us. We form the broad base that funds the infrastructure, the protections, and the services. We pay with our labor, our time, and our earnings. Yet increasingly it feels as though the return on that investment grows thinner while the demands grow heavier.
Jesus understood the weight of living under imperfect systems. He paid taxes Himself, but He never pretended the system was righteous. He taught us to render to Caesar what is Caesar’s while giving our ultimate allegiance to God.
Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. (Matthew 22:21)
The Banker Robs All Four
Through interest, fees, debt structures, and monetary policies that quietly transfer wealth upward, this layer extracts from those below. Many never see the mechanics. They only feel the monthly squeeze.
The Bible’s prohibitions against usury were never quaint rules. They were clear protections against exactly this kind of systemic predation that turns neighbors into debtors and the vulnerable into servants of debt.
If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be like a moneylender to him, and you shall not exact interest from him. (Exodus 22:25)
The Lawyer Argues for All Five
The legal system has become a maze that only the well-resourced can navigate effectively. Laws continue to multiply, complexity increases, and justice too often goes to the highest bidder.
Jesus’ words take on fresh meaning in this environment. When we watch how rules are weaponized rather than applied equally, His warnings against religious and legal leaders who burdened people with heavy loads hit especially hard.
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. (Matthew 23:23)
The Doctor Bills All Six
Healthcare can save lives, but it can also bankrupt them. In a nation as wealthy as ours, the layering of insurance requirements, pharmaceutical profits, and administrative bloat turns healing into another extraction point.
Jesus healed people freely and without condition. He confronted religious leaders who placed heavy burdens on others while offering no help themselves. We are called to care for the sick with compassion, not to turn their vulnerability into profit centers.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me. (Matthew 25:40)
The Criminal Scares All Seven
Crime is real and destructive. Yet the system sometimes amplifies fear for the sake of control while ignoring root causes or protecting bigger operators. This fear keeps people compliant, divided, and willing to surrender more liberty in exchange for the illusion of safety.
Scripture warns us about the danger of fear-based manipulation and the importance of seeking true justice rather than control:
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21)
And the Politician Lives Like a King Off All Eight
This is the capstone for many. These are the ones who promise to fix what they helped design. They grow wealthy in public service and rarely face the same consequences as those they govern. Term limits, lobbying reform, and real accountability feel like distant dreams.
The prophets repeatedly thundered against kings and leaders who devoured the flock they were supposed to shepherd. Their words still ring true today.
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:1)
What Comes Next?
There are additional layers we could easily add to this pyramid. We could add the media that shapes and spins the narrative for all nine. The lobbyists and special interests who pull strings behind the scenes. The undertaker who eventually buries them all. Or the deeper spiritual reality that none of these earthly pyramids, no matter how powerful they appear, will survive the grave.
In the end, every system built on extraction and control has an expiration date. The question is not whether these structures will crumble. They will. The real question is where we choose to place our hope and our daily allegiance while they still stand. We are invited to live with eyes wide open to the patterns without letting them define us or steal our peace. We can recognize the machine without becoming bitter cogs inside it.
Ultimately, we are called to something higher.
Closing Thoughts
In a time when so many are deconstructing empty religion and hollow systems, authenticity means refusing to numb ourselves to these patterns. It means grieving what is broken, yes. But it also means anchoring ourselves in the Kingdom that cannot be shaken. This is a Kingdom where the first are last, where the greatest is the servant, and where true treasure is stored where neither moth nor rust destroys.
We do not have to choose between awareness and hope. We can hold both. We can see the pyramid clearly while refusing to let it determine our worth, our peace, or our ultimate loyalty.
