You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created all things, and they exist because you created what you pleased. — Revelation 4:11
What’s Happening Here
John is caught up in a vision of the throne room of heaven. Around the throne are living creatures and twenty-four elders who continually worship. This verse is part of their song. It is pure adoration focused on God’s worthiness as Creator. Everything that exists does so because He chose to create it according to His pleasure.
The Word
“Worthy” is the central declaration. The Greek word (axios) means deserving or fitting. Glory, honor, and power rightfully belong to God alone. The reason given is creation itself. All things exist because God willed them into being. Nothing is accidental. Everything finds its origin and purpose in His creative will.
The World Then
The early church lived under the shadow of Roman imperial power. Emperors claimed divine titles and demanded worship. Revelation presents a counter-vision: the true throne belongs to the Creator alone. This song of the elders reminds the churches that ultimate authority and worthiness rest with the One who made all things, not with any earthly ruler.
