I have seen their ways, but I will heal them; I will guide them and restore comfort to mourners, creating praise on their lips. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord. “And I will heal them.” — Isaiah 57:18-19
What’s Happening Here
Isaiah 57 confronts the stubbornness and idolatry of God’s people. The chapter does not soft-pedal their rebellion. Yet right in the middle of the rebuke comes this stunning turn. God has seen their ways, and still He chooses to heal, guide, and restore. The tone shifts from judgment to mercy.
The Word
“I have seen their ways” is not casual observation. It is full knowledge of their wandering. The word “heal” appears twice and carries the sense of restoring what is broken, both physically and spiritually. “Restore comfort to mourners” speaks to those who have been grieving. God does not only stop the pain; He creates praise on their lips. The repeated “Peace, peace” is an emphatic blessing extended to both the far and the near.
The World Then
The people of Judah were living with the consequences of long rebellion. Exile loomed. Many felt distant from God, whether through open idolatry or quiet despair.
