Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. — Ephesians 4:2
What’s Happening Here
Paul has just urged the Ephesian believers to live a life worthy of the calling they have received. The first practical expression of that worthy life is this cluster of relational virtues: humility, gentleness, patience, and forbearance in love. Before he speaks of unity, gifts, or maturity, he starts with the posture of the heart toward one another.
The Word
“Completely humble” points to a lowliness of mind that does not grasp for status. “Gentle” describes strength under control, a mildness that does not crush others. “Patient” means long-suffering, the ability to endure difficulty without quick irritation. “Bearing with one another in love” means putting up with one another’s weaknesses and differences, held together by genuine care. These are not soft options. They are the hard, daily work of community.
The World Then
The church in Ephesus brought together Jews and Gentiles, people of different backgrounds, habits, and levels of maturity. Friction was inevitable. Paul knew that unity would not come from ignoring differences but from choosing humility, gentleness, and patient love in the middle of them. These qualities made shared life possible.
