The order in James 4:7 is not incidental. Submit first — hupotassō, to arrange yourself under proper authority, voluntarily and actively. Then resist — antistēte, to take a firm stand against. Then the promise: he will flee. You cannot effectively resist from a position of self-sovereignty. The authority to stand against the enemy comes from the position of submission to God. Willpower won’t do it. Spiritual intensity won’t do it. Humility — placing yourself under the right authority — is what gives the resistance its ground.

Blessed are the meek. It is the beatitude most likely to be misread, because meekness has been badly translated by the culture into something it is not – weakness, passivity, the inability to hold your ground. The Greek word Jesus uses, *praeis*, was used in classical Greek to describe a wild horse that had been broken and trained. The power is fully present. What has changed is who governs it. Meekness is not the absence of strength. It is strength submitted. And the promise attached to it is not a consolation prize. It is the earth.

The first word out of Jesus’ mouth in the Sermon on the Mount is *blessed*. And the first people He names as blessed are the ones nobody in that crowd would have nominated: the poor in spirit. Not the powerful, the confident, or the spiritually accomplished. The ones who know they are empty. The word translated “poor” is *ptochos*, the strongest Greek word for poverty – the beggar with nothing, hand extended, no other option. Jesus takes that word and applies it to the interior life. And then He says the kingdom of heaven belongs to those people. Present tense. Not will belong, once they improve. Belongs. Now.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Not a suggestion, not a starting point for the particularly devout – a structural statement about how reality works. Every generation goes looking for wisdom and looks in mostly the same places: philosophy, science, experience, the opinions of people they admire. Proverbs does not say those things are worthless. It says they are downstream. Today we look at what *yir’at* actually means, what Israel’s wisdom tradition had that no other culture could locate, and why the person who genuinely fears God is harder to deceive than almost anyone else in the room.

There is a version of self-sacrifice that looks like the cross but isn’t. It gives and gives and gives, not from the overflow of a full and grounded soul, but from the hollow place of someone who has confused loving others with losing themselves.

Today’s passage does not call us to that. It calls us to something harder and more clarifying: the mindset of Christ, who emptied himself with full intention, for a defined purpose, in submission to the Father’s will – not in compliance with someone else’s desire for him.

Being true to yourself, in the way God means it, is not selfishness. It means honoring the soul God placed in you, protecting the purpose he put you here for, and refusing to sacrifice what is sacred on the altar of someone else’s comfort or convenience.

Self-surrender to God first, and then, from that grounded place, genuine love for others that actually does them good.
