What’s Happening Here
John opens his Gospel by identifying Jesus as the Word who was with God and was God from the beginning. Then comes this stunning turn: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The eternal Son did not remain distant. He took on humanity and made His home with us. Those who saw Him saw glory, the glory of the only Son, full of grace and truth.
The Word
“The Word became flesh” is one of the most concentrated claims in Scripture. The divine Word entered real human life. “Dwelt among us” uses language of pitching a tent, echoing the tabernacle where God once lived among Israel. “We have seen his glory” is eyewitness language. That glory is described as belonging to the only Son and as being full of grace and truth held together, not in tension.
The World Then
Many in the ancient world separated the spiritual from the physical. Some teachings treated the body as lesser or even as a problem. John confronts that split. God did not send an idea or an appearance. He came in flesh. For Jewish readers, the tabernacle language would have been unmistakable. The presence that once filled the tent of meeting had now taken on a human face.
An Echo in History
This verse has been the heartbeat of Christian confession about who Jesus is. The church has returned to it whenever people tried to make Him only divine or only human. It has also comforted ordinary believers: God is not far off. He came near enough to be seen, touched, and known. Grace and truth arrived in a Person.
The Living Edge
It is easy to keep God in the realm of ideas, feelings, or distant help. This verse will not allow that. The Word became flesh. He dwelt among us. That means our ordinary lives, bodies, struggles, and days are not beneath His notice. He has already entered them. We can look at Jesus and see both the kindness of grace and the clarity of truth, held together in one life.
