Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth. — Matthew 6:19
What’s Happening Here
Jesus is teaching in the Sermon on the Mount about the hidden life of the kingdom. He has just spoken about giving, praying, and fasting without seeking human praise. Now He turns to the question of what we treasure. The command is direct: do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth. The heart follows what it values, and Jesus is training His hearers to value what lasts.
The Word
“Store up” means to accumulate or lay aside as a hoard. “Treasures on earth” covers money, possessions, status, and anything we treat as our security. Jesus is not forbidding ordinary provision or responsible work. He is warning against making earthly things the center of our hope. What we stockpile on earth is vulnerable. What we invest in heaven is not.
The World Then
In the first-century world, wealth was often displayed and stored in ways that could be lost to moth, rust, or theft. Land, garments, and coin were common measures of security. Jesus spoke to people who knew both scarcity and the temptation to grasp. He offered a different economy: treasure that cannot be eaten, stolen, or decayed.
An Echo in History
This teaching has confronted the church whenever comfort and accumulation became easy substitutes for trust. From the early Christians who shared possessions to later voices who warned against greed dressed up as prudence, the same question returns: what are we really storing up, and where? The verse keeps exposing the difference between using things and serving them.
The Living Edge
We still feel the pull to gather more as a hedge against uncertainty. Savings, stuff, reputation, and plans can quietly become the place we look for safety. This verse does not shame careful stewardship. It asks where our treasure actually sits. When earthly things hold our deepest trust, anxiety grows with them. When we loosen our grip and store up what belongs to God, the heart is freer to follow Him.
