Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, not on earthly things. — Colossians 3:1-2
What’s Happening Here
Paul has just finished reminding the Colossians that they died with Christ and have been raised with Him. Because that is already true, he now tells them how to live. The new life they have in Christ should reshape what they love and where they look. Set your hearts on things above, not on earthly things.
The Word
“Raised with Christ” is not a future hope only. It is a present identity. “Set your hearts” means to seek or to fix your desire. “Things above” points to the risen Christ, His reign, and the life that belongs to Him. “Earthly things” are not ordinary responsibilities. In this context they are the old patterns, appetites, and lesser loves that no longer define those who belong to Him.
The World Then
The Colossian church faced teachings that mixed Christ with extra rules, visions, and earthly religious systems. Some were being pulled toward a spirituality that looked impressive but stayed earthbound. Paul lifts their eyes. Their true life is already hidden with Christ. The way forward is not more earthly religion. It is a heart set on the One who is above.
An Echo in History
This verse has called believers back to their true center whenever lesser things began to occupy the heart. It has spoken to those distracted by status, anxiety, controversy, or even religious performance. The same invitation returns in every generation: because you have been raised with Christ, look where He is.
The Living Edge
Our attention follows what we treasure. It is easy for earthly pressures, plans, and worries to take the first place in the heart. This verse does not ask us to ignore daily life. It asks us to live daily life from a higher center. Because we have been raised with Christ, we can keep turning our desire toward Him. What we set our hearts on will shape how we walk through everything else.
