And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. — Matthew 24:12-13
What’s Happening Here
Jesus is speaking on the Mount of Olives about the days leading up to the end. He warns of deception, turmoil, and the rise of lawlessness. In that climate, something quieter and more dangerous happens: the love of many grows cold. Against that cooling, He sets a different path. The one who endures to the end will be saved.
The Word
“Iniquity” (or lawlessness) is the unraveling of what holds life and community together. “The love of many shall wax cold” describes affection and loyalty losing their heat. Love here is not a mood. It is covenant faithfulness toward God and toward others. “Endure unto the end” means remaining under pressure without quitting. Salvation in this verse is tied to perseverance, not a brief burst of faith.
The World Then
The first disciples would soon face betrayal, persecution, and the collapse of familiar structures. Jesus was preparing them for a world in which wrong would feel common and love would feel costly. The danger was not only outside pressure. It was the inner cooling that can happen when evil becomes ordinary.
An Echo in History
The church has returned to these words in every age of upheaval. When public wrong multiplies, love can shrink into self-protection. Believers who kept loving and kept holding fast have often looked like exceptions. Jesus names them as the ones who endure, and He attaches a promise to that endurance.
The Living Edge
It is easy for love to cool when the world feels harsh, disappointing, or unsafe. Weariness can look like wisdom. Distance can feel like discernment. This verse calls us to notice the temperature of our own hearts. Endurance is not grim survival. It is staying warm in love and steady in faith when the surrounding air grows cold. The end is not reached by those who never struggle. It is reached by those who do not quit.
