Verse of the Day – September 4, 2026
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. — James 5:16
What’s Happening Here
James is closing his letter with practical instructions for a suffering church. He has just spoken of the sick calling for the elders, of oil and prayer in the name of the Lord. Then he widens the circle. Healing is not only a private transaction with God. It is also bound up with honest confession and mutual prayer.
The Word
“Confess your faults” means bringing what is hidden into the light with one another, not as spectacle but as truth-telling. “Pray one for another” makes healing a shared work. The aim is “that ye may be healed,” which can include body, relationships, and the soul. “Effectual fervent prayer” points to prayer that is active and earnest. “Availeth much” means it is powerful and effective. Righteousness here is not flawless performance. It is a life aligned with God.
The World Then
The early communities James addressed were under pressure, divided at times, and tempted to hide weakness. Honor culture made confession costly. James refuses isolation as a spiritual strategy. The church was meant to be a place where faults could be named and carried together, and where prayer actually changed things.
An Echo in History
This verse has shaped Christian practices of confession, intercession, and communal care. From small gatherings of believers to larger seasons of renewal, the same pattern returns: hiddenness keeps wounds in place, while honest prayer with others becomes a path toward healing. The church has also been cautioned by it. Confession requires safety, humility, and love, not exposure for its own sake.
The Living Edge
It is easier to pray in general than to tell the truth in particular. This verse invites both. Healing often waits on two movements we resist: admitting where we are actually broken, and letting trusted people pray with us there. Fervent prayer is not louder prayer. It is prayer that refuses to let go. When a life is turned toward God, that kind of prayer carries more weight than it appears to from the outside.
