I was raised learning the Bible. But it was in adulthood, when I began going back through the literary canon on my own terms, that I understood something no one had ever quite said plainly to me: every great work of Western literature is a shadow of the Scriptures. The Bible is not a religious artifact sitting beside Western civilization. It is the source code Western civilization runs on. It is the DNA. And people who do not know it do not understand America.

The Fourth Cup | Daily Bread
Someone told me to look up the fourth cup. So I did. What I found locked into place something I had already sensed was true – that there is a literal thread running from the upper room straight to the cross, held together by a cup Jesus deliberately did not drink. This is not symbolism. This is the most purposeful love story ever told.
