Paul doesn’t criticize the human hunger for glory and honor in Romans 2:7 — he redirects it. Doxa, timē, aphtharsia: glory, honor, immortality. These are not small ambitions. They’re the right ambitions, aimed at the wrong things by most people. The person Paul describes keeps moving toward what lasts, with hypomonē — the same patient endurance that remains under the weight rather than escaping it. Not perfect. Persistently oriented. That’s the portrait. The question underneath it isn’t “have I done enough?” It’s “what am I actually seeking?”

Paul says everything in Scripture was written to give us hypomonē — endurance, the ability to remain under the weight of something worth waiting for — and paraklēsis, the comfort that makes remaining possible. This isn’t a verse about feeling encouraged. It’s a verse about being equipped. The God who kept His word across centuries of waiting has not changed His approach. The record is the evidence. And the evidence holds.
