Scroll social media with eyes that truly see and the whole thing starts to feel like a fever dream. You’ll see outrage cycles ever spinning on nothing. Performance after performance dominating the feed. Language twisted until it means the opposite of what it once did, shaping people’s entire perspective. Trends that celebrate what Scripture calls death and morph reality to call it life.
To the natural eye it is just the way things are. To the person walking in discernment, eyes opened by the Spirit, it is something else entirely. It is a complete farce… a staged production running on borrowed time. And that farce is not stable. It is beginning to unmask itself.
I did not arrive at this conclusion lightly. Discernment is not some superior vantage point you get to enjoy from a safe distance. It’s mentally and emotionally expensive. It grieves. The Lord Himself wept over Jerusalem before He judged it. So before I say what I’m about to say, hear me clearly.
None of this is written from above the world looking down. It is written from inside it, with a heavy heart, by someone who has plenty of her own pride to answer for.
Scripture long ago named exactly what we are watching. Proverbs 6:16-19 says:
These six things doth the Lord hate, yea, seven are an abomination unto Him: a proud look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
This text is not merely an ancient artifact. It is, not far from literally, every headline and news story we see. It is not merely a lack of intelligence and it is not an accident. It is ego, organized and monetized, and it is starting to show its own seams.
A Proud Look
This is the root. It is the first one named, and the one everything else grows out of.
It is the curated feed, the highlight reel, the filtered face that has forgotten what an unedited face even looks like. The influencer selling you a version of themselves that does not exist, banking on you feeling small enough to buy whatever fixes it. The institution that protected the lie for years and punished anyone who dared tell the truth instead.
Do not let anyone tell you pride only looks like boasting. Half the time it looks like a perfectly composed photograph of a life nobody is actually living, propped up right until the weight of reality finally cracks it open.
A Lying Tongue
We do not even call it lying anymore. We call it narrative, spin, messaging, or unquestionable consensus.
For a season a lie can be enforced across media, education, and even parts of the church, and dissent gets labeled hatred. But a lying tongue cannot hold the stage forever. The stories surface. The reevaluations happen. The biological and factual reality that was declared unspeakable simply refuses to stay buried, and the emperor is standing there with no clothes on.
Hands That Shed Innocent Blood
This one is not metaphorical and I refuse to soften it. It is abortion defended as healthcare. Violence against children treated as a policy debate. Wars justified by whichever side is telling the story that week.
Innocent blood is innocent blood whether it is shed in a clinic, a classroom, or a country most of us will never visit, and God has not changed His mind about what that costs, no matter how the culture rebrands it.
An Heart That Deviseth Wicked Imaginations
This is the planning, the scheming, the mind that sits and works out how to get what it wants regardless of who it costs. It is the boardroom decision made knowing who it will hurt. It is content engineered, and I do mean engineered, to exploit exactly what a human heart is most vulnerable to, because someone sat down and imagined how to do it well.
The devil does not always show up with horns. He shows up as an angel of light, and the machinery propping up that performance is not accidental.
Feet That Be Swift in Running to Mischief
This one really gets me, and I don’t understand how so few people miss it. Outrage used to take time to build. Now it is instant. Everyone is sprinting toward the next thing to be furious about before they have even confirmed it is true. A mob forms in an hour and moves on by tomorrow, feet that are swift, just not toward anything good… and not swift toward truth either.
A False Witness That Speaketh Lies
This is testimony corrupted. It is the fabricated screenshot, the out-of-context clip, the accusation made for clout instead of truth. It is bearing false witness against your neighbor at scale, to an audience of millions, with none of the accountability a courtroom would require.
For there is nothing hid, which shall not be manifested; neither was any thing kept secret, but that it should come abroad. (Mark 4:22)
What was staged does eventually come to light.
He That Soweth Discord Among Brethren
This is the seventh thing, and the abomination. It is the one God singles out above the rest.
This is division for its own sake. It is content built specifically to turn people against each other, family against family, church against church, because discord is profitable and peace does not trend. This is the one I feel most acutely inside the church itself, where brothers and sisters have let secondary things become primary and primary things become optional, and where so many are falling away exactly as we were warned they would. (2 Thessalonians 2:3)
The Blindness Is Part of the Farce
The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ should shine unto them. (2 Corinthians 4:4)
First Corinthians 2:14 tells us that the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit, for they are foolishness unto him. But why are so many who claim not to be of it out here mirroring the same behavior? This is why, even as a believer who strives to be humble and prostrate before God, it all really gets under my human skin.
The same platforms that once enforced one version of reality now fracture under the weight of what was always true, and most people will not see the cracks. They will scroll past them, or attack the ones pointing at them. They are deaf, blind, and dumb to what is humming just beneath the surface.
That blindness is not a side effect. It is part of how the farce keeps running as long as it does.
Our Posture in the Unmasking
None of this is cause for despair, and it is not cause for smug superiority either. It is cause for sober clarity.
We are in the world but not of it. Our job is not to fix the production or join the cast. It is to walk transformed, to speak truth without flinching, and to refuse to outsource our seeing to whatever the feed tells us to feel this week.
I will tell you what this costs a person who sees it clearly: It costs you the ability to scroll mindlessly anymore. It costs you friendships with people who think you have gotten too serious, too religious, too much. It tempts you either to numb out and keep scrolling anyway, or to harden into someone who has stopped grieving and started sneering, and I have had to repent of both.
Discernment that turns into contempt has stopped being discernment. It has just become another proud look. I literally can’t stand to witness it, much less do I want to be a part of it, yet when I voice this I am called out by so-called Christian colleagues and friends for not being more Christ-like and not expressing compassion. Excuse me? Are you sure YOU are behaving in a Christ-like manner?
Romans 12:9 says to abhor what is evil, and Psalm 97:10 tells those who love the Lord to hate evil. That’s not the same thing as contempt for a person. Contempt looks down on someone as beneath you; righteous anger burns against what is destroying them and calls it what it is.
Closing Thoughts
I am not writing this to make anyone comfortable. I am writing it with teeth, on purpose. Reality rarely is comfortable, and I stopped pretending otherwise a long time ago. I no longer subscribe to the world’s modern requirement of being politically correct, or softening the truth to protect someone’s feelings or keep the peace. I care more about people’s souls than their feelings, as believers are called to do.
The world is going to keep looking ridiculous to anyone with eyes to see it, and it is going to keep insisting it is not, right up until it cannot anymore. What is changing is the pace. The masks are slipping faster now, and that pace is not slowing down for anybody’s comfort. Every one of the seven things described in this post traces back to the same root – pride, self exalted over the will of God – and pride does not hold up forever under its own weight.
If you have never surrendered your own pride to the One who hates it enough to name it seven times over, today can be that day. Confess with your mouth, believe in your heart, and He will save you, not from a world gone foolish, but from the ego every one of us carries into it.
Maranatha.
