Psalm 4:8 is not a sentiment. It’s the conclusion of a theological argument David has been making to himself across the whole psalm — from distress, through trust, to this: In peace I will lie down and sleep. The Hebrew word levadad means you alone, exclusively, no other candidates. Not the locked door. Not the plan. Not the hoped-for outcome. Batach — the safety that comes from leaning full weight and finding it holding. Sleep is where control ends. David slept anyway. Not because the danger had passed, but because he knew who held the night.

Phroneite — set your minds — is the same word Paul uses in Philippians 2 for the mind of Christ and in Philippians 4 for whatever is true and good and worthy. It’s not a thought exercise. It’s the full disposition of the inner life: where attention, affection, and allegiance are pointed. And Paul’s logic in Colossians 3 is therefore — because you have already died with Christ and your life is hidden in Him, orient from that reality. This isn’t aspiration. It’s consequence. You don’t need to get to things above. You already belong there.
