There is a season that most people who have walked any serious spiritual or personal journey will recognize the moment you name it. It does not announce itself. It does not come with a warning label or a timeline or a clear explanation. It simply arrives — and what it brings with it is a kind of interior darkness that is unlike ordinary sadness, unlike depression as most people understand it, unlike grief in the conventional sense. It is a darkness that feels specifically targeted. As though whatever light you had been navigating by has simply gone out. If you have been there, you know exactly what I am describing. If you have not, I hope this gives you a map for when you do.

Therapists, neuroscientists, and sociologists have mapped its terrain with impressive precision — and Christians would be foolish to dismiss what they’ve found. Most people don’t know the difference between glass and crystal. They look similar, come from the same basic materials, and you could set them side by side and not immediately know which is which. But the difference in price? Significant. And the reason is not what most people would guess.
The same is true about people. I have been called too sensitive my whole life. Too deep. Too much. People were never wrong that I am sensitive. They were just wrong about what that means.
